Help with threads

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 12:59 PM
Well, hello everyone *waves*, I'm pretty new to this community lurking wise, first time posting.

I was wondering what kind of thread you use and where do you get it. I live in country that is practically illiterate when it comes to true sewing notions, especially threads. There's mostly cheap polyester crap, a few heavy duty cottons (in, like, a five color range, cause they're only used for jeans) and two stores (yep, in the whole country) that sell Gutterman's silk thread for its weight in gold (on second thought, I'm not sure gold costs that much). So I'm desperate.
On top of the no-stock issue, there's no one to ask which thread is used where. I've read somewhere that the thread should match the fiber content of the fabric, and that there are different weights, but that's all I know.

So - what do you use, and which online/mail order place do you get it from (If you get it by mail order/online)?
Oh, and I'm not talking about flossing thread, I'm talking the regular get-two-fabrics-together thread. If you do top-stitching with another thread, I would love to know it, also.

*EDIT: Meh, I'm illiterate. Edited all the typos.*

The body contradicts the words

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 9:18 PM
Yesterday's day of blah snowballed into today. Got up at 5am, the lack of traffic meant the drive only took half as long as I expected so I wandered the CBD at just after 6 until I found a coffee shop that was open and tried to kill time. Finally, 3 out of my 4 team members showed up and I started them off at 7am while I made frantic phone calls trying to find the 4th, who never answered any of my texts or voicemails... the manager back at the office apparently spoke to her eventually, he was trying to call her every 15 minutes for at least 2 hours though before she finally answered and said she was 'sick'. I had to dick around with parking (15 minute loading zones were the only street parking while I waited for the pay parking to open) and because we were a man down I had to team up with one of the new kids to show him the ropes, which would have been fine except he whinged the entire time about being tired and hungry and thirsty and feeling dizzy because I wouldn't let him go eat something. He also got rather miffed when I told him to 'suck it up Princess', but it's so not my problem if someone opts in for an early morning shift and forgets to have breakfast. I had to pay $50 to park my car for 2 hours, and we distibuted less than half of the assigned material. And then I had to drive home in the middle of the working day via the office. I NEVER drive in the city and I hate CBD traffic and stupid Sydney drivers so I was very cranky when I got home.

Things got a little better once I got home at least. Spent a bunch of time on hold with the uni but my core enrolment for next year is fiiiiinally sorted out. Just waiting on approval for my final elective, I have written approval from the cross-faculty subject coordinator, just waiting with my fingers crossed for yet another eRequest to go through and have it added to my study plan. Anyhow, I watched some more Stargate: Universe which I am actually quite enjoying, then almost fell asleep on the couch during Watchmen (which has such a seriously awesome soundtrack, it still always surprises me). And more knitting. Yay knitting.

It has been way to long since I've posted to this community. I've decided that it is time to change that.

Here is a little photo shoot using some of my samples.

Victoriana wedding gown

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 10:22 AM
I was in an antique shop* in Antwerp (Belgium) last Friday, and saw this GORGEOUS Victoriana wedding gown.
So I HAD to get some pictures.

I don't know what it costs, I was afraid I'd fall over backwards from hearing the price.

* Don't ask me for the name of the shop, I totally forgot.

chef jackets

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 7:31 PM
looking for cheap chef-jackets somewhere in the CBDish (valley...west end... etc) or chermside. If it makes a difference, it needs to be black and preferably long-sleeved.
So looking for wholesalers who are open to the public, I guess. I know there is one on Water st in Fort Valley, but I don't know if they are open to the public...

thanks :)

Coutil

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 2:14 AM
I am looking for a good place to buy coutil. I called a local store and they no longer carry it and contacted Farthingales who do not have the right colour (cream) in the weight I want. I have a sample of the semi-stiff coutil and it seems way too thin.

I have emailed the following companies asking for samples and have yet to hear back from them.
http://www.corsetmaking.com
www.lostcoasthistpatterns.com/cocofa10cowi.html

I have ordered samples from the following but worry a little about shipping costs:
www.whaleys-bradford.ltd.uk

So far, www.richardthethread.com has the best prices as far as I can tell. Has anyone used their coutil? I emailed them for swatches as well.

Is there anywhere else I should be looking? I checked the memories for fabric here. That is where I got the Whaley's site address from.
I'm in Canada so places in the USA would probably be best.

Thank-you!

Hello,

This is sort of an odd request, but some time ago I commissioned a corset from a user here, and cannot for the life of me remember her LJ username. All I know is her actual name (Kate M***) and that she lived in Canada, moved during the course of making my order, and that she custom-made me a mustard-yellow striped corset with buttercream lacing that I absolutely love and still wear quite often. I always get compliments on it! =) I am in California if that jogs your memory.

If you're still here, I'd like to get in contact with you again and ask if I can commission you to make another one for me? And this time I promise i won't lose your contact information! =S If you like, you can e-mail me at the-strangeling@livejournal.com if you'd prefer.

Thank you so much!

I am having a clearance sale for the first time! Some jewellery pieces do include steampunk elements, and many reductions in prices have been made to the jewellery pieces, if you like anything, this would be a good time to purchase it! :)

Someone commissioned a set of 8 pieces from me, with everything done to her specifications, and ended up not paying. So I have left with 8 pieces and with no one who wants them, so... Yes. Thank you!

computer repair

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 3:39 PM
My computer curled up and died on me.

Can anyone recommend someone who will repair it for me? Who is reliable and clever and doesn't charge exorbitant sums?

I live in the Redlands, so Southish Eastish would be handy.

Thanks.

Finally, an actual Etsy update! It's been too long, with too many items getting backed up.

Most of my offerings are hair combs and pins, but one of my jewels is the piece I created for a tutorial on decorating mini tophats.

Question about a corset.

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 12:10 AM
I've been watching this community for a while, and I have found it to be helpful. So I'm hoping someone can help me out.

My boyfriend recently bought me a corset from Charlotte Russe. Now as corsets go, I would not say it was the best quality. Whether this would be considered a fashion corset, or just a bad corset, I can't say. The problem initially was that it felt more like a corset styled shirt, more than anything. On top of which, the first time I wore it, I had noticed that the boning was slipping out the bottom of my corset. I have been able to mod it to the extent that it now feels tighter and more cinched around the waist as well as sewing up the holes by the boning, however, I am by no means a corsetier. The problem now is that where my waist feels more cinched, my bust is getting no support whatsoever.

My question now is, is there any way to fix/mod this so that my bust has that nice, sexy lift and support? It has plastic boning, so I'm wondering if replacing the bones with steel ones would help or a simple way to fix only the chest area? Or is this just a lost cause?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
- Gillian.

Centrelink + post grad...

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 2:29 PM
I'm after some help with Centrelink and postgrad study.

I'm an external student in a Masters degree at UNE and next year I'll be taking a course load that I understand is sufficient enough to be considered full time by Centrelink.

Also, the masters is a coursework degree, a Commonwealth supported place.

I called Centrelink to ask if my course was eligible and a very uncertain-sounding person told me she didn't think it was, but that from 2012 all Masters degrees will be eligible.

Needless to say, I have some doubts as to if she's correct. And I can't seem to find any useful information on this on centrelink's website about how to go about this.

I've heard "3rd party" stories about people arguing Centrelink into paying them for study when the majority of the degree is by coursework, not research thesis.

I'm a little lost as to where to turn to and would like to know where I can go to see if I'm eligible... my job finishes at the end of the year and I'd like to know exactly how little money I'm going to be living on!!

Does anyone here do postgrad coursework and receive Centrelink?

Ultimately I would prefer to work part time than deal with centrelink, but I would like to know if I have any sort of back up available to me.

Thanks...

Clearance Blouse and Tea Dying

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 10:00 PM
Old Navy has several summer-weight blouses on the clearance racks that would make good Victorian or Edwardian blouses. I got this one for $10.

I wanted a more Earthy color, so I dyed my blouse with tea yesterday and now I'm changing the buttons.

If anyone is interested in tea dying, I posted the process on my blog. The vinegar in the dye bath is optional, but I didn't want to take any chances that the color might wash out.
